WASHINGTON The captains of the U.S. Navy's two hospital ships mentioned Thursday that the vessels have handled fewer than 20 sufferers since deploying to New York and Los Angeles in an effort to alleviate the strain on native hospitals.

The USNS Mercy, the primary of the dual hospital ships to deploy, arrived in Los Angeles final week and has since handled 15 sufferers.
